Unicorn Reverse Applique

.

My daughter will be attending her best friend’s birthday party this weekend. Since I really like this little girl, I wanted to make her gift. She is crazy about unicorns and, of course, sparkly things.

The shirt is made with cotton knit in 2 colors, and some sparkle synthetic that’s left over from ice skating costumes. I used reverse applique for most of the motif, then appliqued the mane over the top. The pattern is a regular t-shirt pattern from Ottobre.

It’s so cute. I’m sure she’ll love it. And I see you used cuffs and bands to get around the lack of a coverstitch, but how did you bind the neck?

Thanks! It’s not a neck binding, it’s a neck band. I serged the neck band on. The neck band is a long skinny piece (maybe 2″ by 12″). I serged the ends together, then folded it in half longways. I marked the point opposite the seam with a pin (this is the center front). I pinned the seam at the center back of the neck opening, and pinned the pin mark to the center front. Then I stretched the neck band piece and serged around to attach it to the neck opening.

That’s amazing. I’ve never done applique with knit, but received Natalie Chanin’s book for Christmas. Might have to give it a try!

Thanks! This shirt is very heavily influenced by Natalie Chanin’s work.

I think that is the cutest top ever. What a great idea. I think this will be the birthday girls favorite gift!
